Character Development Programme

Pastoral Care & Career Guidance

At AJC, we strive to develop students in two main aspects: inculcating positive values so that they will turn out to be caring and resilient servant leaders, and preparing them for the world of work. Our students are equipped with skills, and engage in deep discussions and reflections about their core values and principles. They are also given opportunities to explore their areas of interest and to put what they have learnt into practice. It is our belief that this approach, which is modeled after a cycle of continuous learning and experience, will result in the personal growth of all our students.

Our programmes are designed with our students in mind. Annually, a Career Interest and Lifeskills survey is conducted for all JC1 students, and subsequent programmes are customized, where possible, to best meet the needs of that particular cohort of students. Within resource and time constraints, we regularly offer elective programmes to address the individual needs of our students more effectively, as well as to develop in them a greater sense of responsibility for their own learning.

Pastoral Care
Pastoral Care at AJC covers two main areas: Lifeskills and Community Involvement.

a) Lifeskills
The Lifeskills programme at AJC features core as well as elective programmes. Core programmes which all students undertake include Values & Sexuality Education, Stress & Time Management talks and the Resilience programme. In addition, we offer the Civics Elective programme, which allows students to individually opt for one of several modules on offer.

b) Community Involvement
At AJC, our main approach to Community Involvement is Service-Learning. All JC1 classes are expected to complete a Service-Learning project of their choice, and students are also encouraged to undertake projects with their CCA groups. In addition, students are free to participate in ad-hoc projects that are regularly publicized through our in-house portal or to initiate individual projects with external organizations.

Students also have the opportunity to serve the wider community in the region through International Service-Learning (ISL) trips. Formerly known as Overseas Community Involvement Projects (OCIP), AJC sends about 40-60 students on such trips annually.

Career Guidance
We offer a comprehensive Career Guidance programme which includes core skills such as Resume Writing and Interview Skills. Besides tapping on MOE initiatives such as the Education and Career Guidance portal, students can also refer to the in-house Higher Education portal for more information on tertiary education. There is also an annual Career & Scholarship Fair where institutions of higher learning (local and overseas) and organizations are invited to set up booths and give talks. Students are also given opportunities to put their skills learnt into practice through participation in the Work Experience programme. In addition, the annual University Admission Talk for Parents allows parents to hear first-hand from local university representatives so that they are better placed to participate in their child’s decision-making process where university applications are concerned.
