Introduction to the JC curriculum

ACADEMIC INFORMATION 

I.   GENERAL INFORMATION 

(a)  Revised JC Curriculum 

Starting from 2006, students entering Junior Colleges (JCs) and the Centralized Institutes (CI) will take an ‘A’ level curriculum that emphasizes breadth of learning and flexibility.

Students will be given opportunities to learn from the following three different disciplines: Languages; Humanities & the Arts; and Mathematics & Sciences. For instance, a Humanities/ Arts student will take at least one contrasting subject from the Mathematics and Sciences disciplines, and vice versa. 

(b)  Three Levels Of Study

Students may select subjects at three levels of study: Higher 1 (H1), Higher 2 (H2) and Higher 3 (H3).

Equivalent to half of H2 in breadth but similar to H2 in depth

Equivalent to the rigour of former 'A' Level subjects.

Subjects with a variety of learning opportunities (e.g. advanced content, research paper, university module).

II.   CHOICE OF SUBJECTS

  • Must have offered Additional Mathematics and preferably have obtained C6 or better in Additional Mathematics at the GCE ‘O’ Level Examination

 

Physics, Chemistry & Biology

H2: Should preferably have obtained:

  • B3 or better in the respective pure science subjects or
  • A2 or better in the relevant combined science subjects

H1(Phy & Chem): Should preferably have obtained:

  • C6 or better in the respective pure science subjects or the relevant combined science subjects

H2 Chinese Language and Literature

(H2 CLL)

Preferably

  • Students with at least  a C6 in Higher Chinese
  • Students with no Higher Chinese but have obtained at least an A2 in ‘O’ level Chinese will have to sit for an aptitude test

H1 General Studies in Chinese (GSC)

Preferably

  • Students with at least a C6 in Higher Chinese
  • Students with no Higher Chinese but have obtained at least an A2 in ‘O’ level Chinese

 (c)     Number of Subjects to Offer

In addition to GP, MTL* and PW, all students are to offer 3 H2 and 1 H1 content-based subjects, at least one of which is a subject from a contrasting discipline. (*Except those who have passed with at least a D7 in Higher Mother Tongue Language at ‘O’ level . Please refer to the Joint Admission Exercise Prospectus 2011 for further details of exemption.)

 

III.  SUBJECT COMBINATIONS      

  1. A highlighted box   box indicates a contrasting subject.  
  2. The total number of units indicated includes compulsory subjects General Paper, Mother Tongue Language and Project Work. 
  3. ** The counting of units is as follows: 2 units for each H2 subject, 1 unit for each H1 subject, General Paper, Project Work and Mother Tongue Language.  One unit for MT Language will be included in the counting even if a student is exempted from taking the subject at the ‘A’ level examination.   
  4. * To offer H3, students must offer the same subject at H2. The following H3 subjects are offered: Geography, History, English Literature, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry.

National examinations for all H1 subjects will be taken at the end of JC2. The exceptions are:

(i)     Project Work (PW)

Students will take the PW examination at the end of JC1. They cannot repeat PW in JC2.

(ii)       H1 Mother Tongue Language (MTL)

Students sit for H1 MTL at the end of JC1 and may choose to sit for it again in JC2.

(b)    Conditions for Promotion, Retention & Superannuation

  • To be promoted to the second year, a JC1 student must obtain at least 2H2 and 2H1 passes.
  • Retention in JC 1 will depend on the aptitude, attitude and conduct of the student during the course of study.  Students who do not meet the requirements may be superannuated at the discretion of the College.
  • JC1 repeat students who have failed the Promotional Examination for the second time will be superannuated.
  • All JC1 repeat students may only offer subject combinations with 10 Academic units in College. 

(c)    Criteria for Students to Offer Subjects at H3 Level

Application for H3 modules will open after the Promotional Examination results are released. 

Students who wish to offer the SMU H3 Course, NUS H3 Course, NTU H3 course or MOE H3 modules in JC 2 must meet ALL of the following criteria:

  • Must have obtained a grade ‘A’ in the pre-requisite H2 subject(s).
  • Must have obtained a least a Grade ‘B’ in all other H2 subjects.
  • Must pass all other subjects.

JC1 mid-year

  • Must have obtained at least a Grade ‘B’ in the prerequisite H2 subject(s).
  • Must pass all other subjects.

GCE ‘O’ Level

Examination

Must have obtained the following results at one sitting:

- Distinction in the relevant subject, and

- Distinctions in 4 specified subjects.

Total number of units

The maximum number of academic units is 12.

Other criteria

  • The number of H3 subjects to be offered by each student is capped at 1.
  • Students who are waiting for the selection results of the NUS/NTU/SMU H3 modules may apply for the MOE H3 module. They should drop the MOE H3 module once they are selected for the NUS/NTU/SMU H3 module.
  • As stipulated by the institutions offering the H3 module.

(d)          Code of Conduct for Examinations and Tests

  • Students must sit for all scheduled tests and examinations for all subjects that they are taking.
  • All mobile phones and other electronic devices capable of storing and displaying visual and verbal information are not allowed in all test and examination venues. Students found in possession of any electronic communication devices in any of the examination venues would be deemed to have committed a dishonest act, a very serious offence and would be penalised severely in the examination. The college reserves the right to void the result of the subject/paper concerned.
  • Anyone who is found cheating or collaborating in a cheating case may be barred from sitting for the rest of the papers. If found guilty, he/she will be given ZERO marks for the subject(s) concerned and he/ she will not be issued a testimonial.
  • A student who is absent from college examinations due to illness must be produce a valid medical certificate. Otherwise, zero marks will be awarded for that test and “absent without reason” will be indicated in the student’s records.
  • A student may be exempted from the College examinations only if he/she is hospitalised or diagnosed with long term illnesses.  A medical certificate must be produced. The College reserves the right to decide the student’s promotion status.
